Shimizu Ushio

Join us at SOFA New York (May 29, 2008) to see works from this artist.

Ushio Shimizu (清水潮) was born as second son of Suigetu Shimizu who has carried on Bankoyaki Ceramic tradition for three generations. Although he has mastered the technique of ceramic under the guidance of his father and his grandfather Ushio did not want to carry on the traditional style of Bankoyaki.

So he went ahead to create his own dynamic style by putting while glaze on black. Ushio’s bold design comes from the martial arts, Budoh where he has always won competitions in his school days.

Having received a prestigious award of Incentive Prize from Nihon Dentou Kougei –ten (Exhibition of Japanese Traditional Crafts) in 2005 at such an early stage of his career, he is indeed a very promising ceramist.
